SYMKEY.EXE is a symmetric key encryption/decryption program available to download free. It works on any Windows computer to encrypt/decrypt any type of file. It is a self-contained solution in one file that requires no installation and leaves no trace. This site is intended to provide relevant information not included in the downloadable package and enable you to get software updates from the original author. Encrypted files are harder to read just as a locked door is harder to enter. Intentionally introducing such difficulty is a means of protecting the privacy of information stored in your files. Files and messages may be encrypted prior to sending as email, since sending unencrypted data over the Internet exposes you to significant privacy risks. For the purposes of this web site, a plain text file is one that ends in “.txt”; and a binary file is one that has any other ending. Encrypted plain text files can be pasted into the body of an email message. Binary files can also be encrypted, but would be transmitted via email as attached files instead. SYMKEY.EXE is not just for email. You may also use it to encrypt any file for more secure local storage. (If you wish to secure plain text files without sending them over email, we recommend putting them in a zip file, then encrypting the zip file.)
